Rapid economic growth in recent years has led to a population boom in Bhubaneswar as more and more people migrate to the city looking for employment. This in turn has led to an increase in slums, with an estimated 40% of the city’s population dwelling in substandard living conditions. The city’s available resources are simply overwhelmed by this population influx.

Cuttack, Orissa

Cuttack has experienced rapid development in recent years due to the rise of its neighboring city, Bhubaneswar, as an IT hub. There is also a flourishing mining industry in the area. This rapid development is at least partly responsible for the hundreds of slums in the two cities as people migrate in search of jobs. The state has created a task force with the objective of making Orissa slum-free and both Bhubaneswar and Cuttack are amongst the cities in the first phase of the project.
