Of Signs & Signage

As keen readers of the Project Sammaan blog and people deeply invested in the project, you already know that the signage tender for 4 community toilet typologies has just been sent out. As we work on refining the designs for the signs themselves, and creating the specifications for the remaining typologies, this seemed like a great spot to take a step back and reveal the signage program for the Project Sammaan toilet facilities.

There are four different categories of signs in the Project Sammaan facilities:

Outreach & Public Relations Update

June saw a variety of activities on several different communications streams. Most significantly, the project’s profile was added to the SuSanA website, worked continued on the initial draft version of the work-in-progress Technical & Design Guidelines document, and a series of project partner profile videos planned out.

The Sustainable Sanitation Alliance (SuSanA) is a network of organizations working in sustainable sanitation formed in 2007. Its purpose is to act as a forum for those working in the sanitation to share their work while promoting awareness and, hopefully, fostering collaboration amongst members and other interested parties. Currently a project brief and issues of the newsletter have been shared on the site. Going forward, we will contribute photographs and additional documents to continue promotional efforts for the project.

Sammaan on SuSanA!

A significant communications-related milestone has been reached by Project Sammaan: it’s being featured on the global sanitation forum SuSanA! This is obviously a very exciting development and one that will increase the project’s footprint exponentially. It also puts our project in very good company.

Ostensibly, The Sustainable Sanitation Alliance (SuSanA) is a network of organizations working in sustainable sanitation. Formed in 2007, its purpose is to act as a forum for those working in the sanitation to share their work while promoting awareness and, hopefully, fostering collaboration amongst members and other interested parties.

Project Coordination

The month of May was all about coordinating for the advancement of the project and the pending deliverables to be accomplished. CTRAN successfully coordinated for the exposure visit to Nagpur for the DEWATS system. Apart from this CTRAN arranged and corresponded for the monthly meetings on the 8th and 9th of this month.

Multiple interactions with other divisions concerned with water supply and sewerage for creating a database of information on the sewerage connections in the proposed locations were facilitated.

Project Communications Update

May was yet another very busy month for the communications team, with blog activity crescendoing, the Vox Populi video completed, work continuing on the Technical & Design Guidelines document, and, most importantly, Project Sammaan being added to SuSanA, the online sustainable sanitation alliance forum.

As the overall project activities continue increasing, the blog has seen an influx in participation from all partners. Abstract posts about the state of sanitation in India joined those on public relations, branding, project management, and community census activities, making the month of May one of the most diverse in terms of features. These posts present a good snapshot of the wide range of touch-points for Project Sammaan and reinforce its uniqueness in the sanitation sector.

Managing Sammaan

As the Central Project Manager for Project Sammaan, my responsibilities include managing workstreams of all the partners and providing strategic liaising with senior bureaucrats in both the BMC and CMC, as well as other government departments in Orissa.

The key objective of my role is to ensure that the project is completed within the planned timelines. I work towards enhancing the communication between various partners and between the project team through weekly calls and facilitating discussions among partners to sort out pending issues. I also manage the field activities of Quicksand, which includes coordination among field partners for site identification, site surveys and approvals.

Illustrations and the Art of Toilet Facility Maintenance

Project Sammaan aims to rethink urban sanitation services by applying holistic, systems-based thinking and principles informed by user-centered design insights from the field. These improvements are broadly categorized into four “Pillars of Innovation”:

• Business Models

• Operations & Maintenance models

• Architecture & Infrastructure Design

• Branding & Communications

The Branding & Communications stream, led by Codesign, aims to develop and deploy a system of improved messaging, including the branding of the facilities themselves, as well as the system of visuals (signage, use of color, etc.) throughout the Project Sammaan facilities.

Outreach & Public Relations Update

The mandate to document and share Project Sammaan developments and learnings manifests itself in many ways, and April’s activities are a prime example of this, with a video being produced, a media kit developed, blog posts being added to the website, and, most significantly, formal project reports for the municipal corporations drafted.

Members of the Quicksand and CFAR teams visited slums in Bhubaneswar at the beginning of the month to interview community members for a “voice of the people” video. Additionally, CFAR transcribed the video clips into the Odiya font, allowing their comments to be conveyed exactly as they were said.

Vox Populi

On a recent trip to Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, members of the Project Sammaan team from Quicksand and CFAR visited slums with the intention of recording a series of interviews with community members. These conversations are part of an initiative to build off of the user-experience theme that governed Potty Project in the past and guides Project Sammaan both today and going forward.

Whereas previous visits to these communities and interactions with those living within them were focused around gaining insights that will help drive specific aspects of Project Sammaan, these visits were intentionally devoid of such parameters. These conversations were intended to afford people a platform in which they could share thoughts and opinions on their daily lives, their communities, and their aspirations for the future.

More than just the news…

As we work on the many different challenges of Project Sammaan, it is worthwhile to spend some time thinking about the motivations behind this endeavour. The primary goal is building toilets for those underserved by the existing urban sanitation systems in India, but we should not lose sight of Project Sammaan’s original intention as a pilot project.

The lives of the thousands of people served by the toilets we are building will doubtless be improved through these facilities. However, the toolkit that will share the insights of this project will lead to an improvement in the lives of millions more people as other organisations and governments use our learnings and documentation to build even more improved toilets and sanitation facilities.
